Roller derby tryouts were something else. I'd never skated before and most of the rest of the group had had at least a month of skill clinics to teach them the basic skills we were all expected to demo. At the time it all seemed really serious and scary, surrounded by all these tense new skaters and all these badass derby players.

I only fell down once during tryouts and I used to be proud of that... but these days I'm proud of how many times I've fallen and gotten back up.
